Judge who freed journalist, trade unionist ‘red-tagged’

A tarpaulin “red tagging” a judge was displayed in Mandaluyong City after she ordered the dismissal of illegal possession of explosive charges against a journalist and a trade unionist.

Judge Monique Quisumbing Ignacio of the Mandaluyong Regional Trial Court Branch 209, was pictured in a tarpaulin on Shaw Boulevard corner EDSA in Mandaluyong, where she was congratulated for freeing Manila Today’s editor Lady Ann Salem and Rodrigo Esparago.

The apparent taunt was condemned by lawmakers and organizations.

“The fake congratulatory tarp does not deceive us and many others aware of red-tagging,” the Manila Today said in a statement.

The alternative media outfit said that the tarpaulin was a “veiled threat” to Judge Ignacio and other judges “who would dare probe and expose the truth in the police modus operandi of using search warrants to plant evidence and fabricate charges” against activists, journalists, and other critics of the Duterte administration.
