Magnitude 6.6 earthquake shakes Southern Luzon

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a 6.6 magnitude earthquake that was experienced in areas of South Luzon last Saturday, July 24.


At around 4:49 am, the earthquake was recorded to have occurred at a depth of 116 km near Calatagan, Batangas.


An aftershock succeeded with a magnitude of 5.1 which PHIVOLCS updated to 5.5 at around 4:57 am at a depth of 107 km.


According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, there were no reported casualties and no major damages to key infrastructures. However, damages to some house properties were observed, particularly in Lubang Island.


Calatagan Mayor, Peter Oliver Palacio, said in an interview on Dobol B TV that the barangay disaster response teams were alerted immediately following the earthquake to monitor any damage.


Among the areas in South Luzon that have felt the earthquake were cities in the regions of MIMAROPA and CALABARZON. Other areas in NCR were reported to have felt the tremors as well.


Palacio stated that the local government unit will continue to monitor the area for any damage reports.
