President Rodrigo Duterto directed Presidential Assistant on Foreign Affairs (PAFA) Robert Borje to deliver initiatives on boosting labor relations and assistance on Filipino workers in Saudi Arabia.

The visit is set to administer the repatriation of OFWs in Saudi Arabia who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. A letter enclosing this intent was addressed to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.

Malacanang announced this action is relevant to the Kalinga at Malasakit for Overseas Filipino Workers, emphasizing its significance with the COVID-19 pandemic.

It can be noted that last May, the suspension was lifted on the deployment of OFWs in Saudi Arabia due to the unwarranted requirements posed by Saudi employers, amounting to 3,500 Saudi riyals or Php 47,000.

President Duterte and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, renewed their commitment regarding the bilateral ties between the two countries. Particularly on trade and investments, and protection of migrant workers’ civil rights.

This effort on strengthening ties and protecting the welfare of OFWs in the Arab country is hoped to produce a positive outcome.
