The Cardinals shined at the 21st ASEAN University Games

MANILA, Philippines - Team Philippines, represented by the Mapúa University’s Men’s Basketball and Women’s Beach Volleyball team, achieved outstanding results at the 21st ASEAN University Games, held from June 25 to July 6 at Surabaya and Malang, Indonesia.


With their 95-74 win over the De La Salle-Dasmariñas Patriots in the 4th Philippine University Basketball League (PUBL) Championship last February, the Mapúa Cardinals were chosen to represent the country in the 21st ASEAN University Games.


Showcasing their athletic prowess, the red and gold countered and prevailed over a nail-biting semifinal against strong-contender Indonesia, advancing to the finals with a 20-point lead, 101-81.


The squad from Intramuros faced Team Malaysia in the Men’s Basketball Finals. They started off in the lead, with 23-16 for the first quarter. The Cardinals kept the lead in the second quarter as they widened the gap to 45-33. Team Philippines ended the third canto with an impressive 20-point lead, 69-49. The Cardinals were not complacent and continued to rally as they sealed the win with a 29-point lead, 93-64.


Staying undefeated throughout the tournament, the Mapúa Cardinals added one more gold for the Philippines.

The red and gold continued to shine in the Women’s Division of the Beach Volleyball tournament of the 21st ASEAN University Games. The Mapúa Lady Cardinals made a mark by securing a commendable third place, showcasing their skill and teamwork on the sandy court. The Lady Cardinals displayed exceptional resilience and strategic play, earning them a well-deserved podium finish with the bronze medal.


The Philippines now has three golds, three silvers, and nine bronze medals in the ASEAN University Games.


The two teams showed a remarkable performance at the 21st ASEAN University Games which has brought pride and honor to the country and to the Mapúan community. It is also a testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion.


The two squads are now setting their sights on future competitions. These teams aim to build on this success, especially for the upcoming centennial season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
